How Three Women Built a Trusted Voice for Our Community

What does it take to build a trusted local newspaper from the ground up? Determination, persistence, community support — and, according to its founders, a healthy dose of naivety.

Join the Southern Business Women’s Network for an inspiring panel discussion with Cara Schultz, Kaye Rodden and Mohya Davies, three remarkable women who played a pivotal role in establishing the Prom Coast News: a community-funded and operated fortnightly newspaper serving South Gippsland.

Launched just two years ago, the Prom Coast News has become a much-loved source of local reporting, providing thoughtful analysis of regional issues alongside community stories, profiles, sport and event coverage. The newspaper is distributed through more than 20 outlets across the region and is also available as a digital edition.

During this insightful panel discussion, Cara, Kaye and Mohya will share the story behind the publication — from turning an ambitious idea into reality to harnessing volunteer capacity and building the trust of the community. They will also explore the continuing importance of hyper-local journalism in keeping regional communities informed, connected and represented.

At a time when online algorithms increasingly shape our social, cultural and political conversations, this panel will consider the vital role local journalism plays in strengthening social cohesion, encouraging constructive discussion and ensuring local voices continue to be heard.

Meet the Panel

Cara Schultz

Cara is an award-winning writer, journalist and editor with two decades of experience in the for-purpose sector. Her work centres on community building, environmental justice and humanitarian systems change. She has edited publications across Australia and internationally, including the Prom Coast News, The Humanitarian Leader and Australian Birdlife magazine.

Kaye Rodden OAM

Kaye is a retired scientist and farmer with a doctorate in agriculture. In 2024, she was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for her service to conservation following more than 40 years of volunteering with Landcare at local, state and national levels. She has also contributed regularly to Landcare publications and national agricultural newspapers.

Mohya Davies

Mohya is an experienced regional leader with a deep and enduring connection to the South Gippsland community. Her career spans more than 40 years across farming, retail and accommodation. She has served on numerous committees and boards, including Prom Coast Centres for Children and South Gippsland Hospital, and spent 12 years as a South Gippsland Shire Councillor, including one year as Mayor.

About the Venue

The event will be held at the Austral Hotel in Korumburra, affectionately known by locals as the “Top Pub”. Proudly locally owned and operated, the Austral has long been part of Korumburra’s history and community spirit, providing a welcoming meeting place for friends, families and visitors from across Gippsland. Located in the heart of town, its relaxed hospitality and strong community connection make it a fitting setting for an evening celebrating the women who are helping local voices thrive.
